The advice given many years ago to two young Canterbury tennis players by Mr F. M. B. Fisher, one of New Zealand’s greatest tennis players and a most colourful personality, will always be remembered. When “F.M.8.,” as he was called, was introduced to his young and inexperienced opponents at Wilding Park before a match for the Canterbury doubles titles, he must have been an aweinspiring figure. Aged 59, and with a string of English and European doubles titles behind him, he was a veritable mine of information; and when he sportingly offered some advice the impressionable young men awaited his expert counsel.
“I’ll give you a tip," the great man said. “This has won many a match for me.” They waited expectantly. “Always double-knot your shoe laces," he said. .
