When “F.M.8.,” as he was called, was introduced to his young and inexperienced opponents at Wilding Park before a match for the Canterbury doubles titles, he must have been an aweinspiring figure. Aged 59, and with a string of English and European doubles titles behind him, he was a veritable mine of information; and when he sportingly offered some advice the impressionable young men awaited his expert counsel.
