ROAD TUNNEL ACCESS

Underpass At Butts Valley

A traffic underpass Butts Valley to enable traffic to move to and from the Horotane and Heathcote Valleys without cutting across the approach to the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel is proposed by the Ministry of Works. Both motor and pedestrian traffic will be completely removed from the tunnel motorway.

These amended plans were placed before the Heathcote County Council at its meeting last evening. They are the outcome of a, meeting on May 8 among the Road Tunnel Authority, the Ministry of Works, and council representatives.

Under the new proposal, there will be no interference with any traffic on the motor-way between Ferry road and the tunnel mouth. The extra cost is estimated at £ll,OOO, mainly brought about by the underpass. Part of Horotane Valley road will be closed where it would pass over the motorway, and a new road will be constructed to link Horotane Valley with Butts Valley and the underpass.
