“Barking Dogs”

Sir, —God has given a dog a bark. No-one should stop a dog barking if it wants to. That Alsatian is guarding its owner and property—so why all the fuss? Cats kick up a row at night, roosters crow, cows low. Humans are worst of all, shrieking good-byes, giggling, slamming car doors, blowing horns. “AntiHydatids” wants them operated on. What a monster! A man had a faithful dog which was much loved by him and his family. The dog got old and sick; his owner was going to shoot him. He has thanked God ever since he did not do so. Looking into those brown eyes, he couldn’t Next morning, hearing the dog making a muffled sound down by the river, he went out and saw his small daughter in the river. The brave old dog, with her dress in his mouth, was trying to pull her out, and send out signals, but had hot the strength. Needless to say the dog is the star member of that family ever since.— Yours, etc., LOVER OF ANIMALS. July 6, 1960.

Sir, —I support "Anti-Hydatids” on barking dogs. Some years ago I had a nice home in Spreydon that I was forced, to leave because of '3 I cduld never understand why anyone is allowed to keep dogs, roosters, or any pest to cause another to quit his home. The authorities seem to get dbwn on a motor-cycle or a tooting car horn, but let the real pests go free. The powers that be must have iron nerves, and do not know what night worries are, and care nothing at all. In Picton the dogs seem under control. None of the dirty, brutes are seen wandering the streets or Jieard at night. There must be very few, which is as it should be.—Yours, etc., CREMATE THEM. July 6, 1960. , [“Merivale" may reply, closing this correspondence. Ed., "The Press.”]
