Television
Sir,—Watching the skilled men on the wharf at Lyttelton loadirig scrap iron, I mentioned to one of .them: “It is a pity we cannot all have a transistor radio set and a television set in exchange for this junk which gives you a lot of trouble io load.” As Japan appears to want scrap iron, pine logs, coal, tallow, wool, and other raw materials, the only way Japan can pay for them is by the sale of manufactured goods.'Your special Tokyo correspondent has summed up the position accurately and I hope his reference to Japanese television sets will be studied by our politicians, even if they are more concerned with votes at the moment. Japanese television sets cost, retail in Tokyo, from £59 to £3B2.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, July 5, 1960.
