Organisers Fear Reprisals
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, June 4.
Organisers of the United Party's anti-republic campaign are afraid to conduct a canvass for fear of being gaoled under the Emergency Regulations, the “Rand Daily Mail’s’’ political correspondent said today. “We’ve bumped against a wall of intimidation,” one party canvasser was quoted as saying. “I’ve not experienced anything like it in the 24 years I have been in politics,” he said. “People are afraid to canvass for the antirepublic campaign. “They say they have been told they will be gaoled under the Emergencv Regulations if they do. Because of the threats , scores of canvassers have re-; signet? in the last few weeks.”
Shops in Johannesburg and nearby towns have refused to display anti-republic posters in their windows, the political writer said.
He said that the anti-republic campaign was finding it hard to raise money because many people believed they would be penalised in some way if it became known they had contributed.
