PROTECTION OF INDUSTRY
Link With Living Standards
New Zealand Is on the threshold of another surge forward in its industrial development and the necessary impetus can be given by more widespread recognition and acceptance of the need for a policy of protecting its own market and greater incentive to export where possible. Mr A. R. Dellow, genera] secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association, says in a naper to be presented to the 1960 Industrial Development Conference.
Manufacturing is cumulative in its growth, and manv industries are inter-related, he says. “The workers in one industry are the customers of others so that prosperity for one helps to sustain others. “Production Itself is interrelated and one industry calls on a number of others for materials and components, servicing, packaging, transport and so on.” Growth in one industry stimulates progress in others, while falling production in one has wide spread effects on the others.
"Industry does not ask for special favours. It believes it is entitled to protection from unequal competition from unfair trade practices and low-cost production in other countries." Mr Dellow says.
“It also believes that provided industry itself measures up to its responsibilities it is entitled to preference in its own home market, and that above all security of employment of those engaged in industry, and their general standard of living, must be safeguarded.’’
