STRIKE ENDED AT TASMAN
Settlement After All-Day Talks (New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, April 10. The strike at the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company's mill at Kawerau which involved about 140 men was settled late on Saturday afternoon after. an all-day discussion between the management and officials of the Auckland Engineers’ Union. The men, including 100 Maintenance fitters, struck in support of five fitters who were dismissed on Friday morning for refusing to work through their lunch-hour during a shut-down on Thursday. The men decided to return to work after being told by one of the negotiators, Mr A. H. Berry, secretary of the union, that the management had agreed to the reinstatement of the five men. He said the company had given assurances it would keep strictly to the award and that the matter of local agreements made with the previous management would be subject to further negotiations with the union. A spokesman for the company said the dispute had been settled satisfactorily.
