CIVIL DEFENCE POSTS
Early Decision Promised An announcement on the appointment of civil defence commissioners for New Zealand would be made in the next few days, the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Anderton) said on Saturday afternoon. Earlier it was reported that the names of the commissioners would be announced in March. “Both the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) and myself have been away and we have not got around to it yet,’’ Mr Anderton said. “However, there should be an announcement within the next few days,” he added. It Is intended to appoint four regional commissioners, two in the North Island and two in the South, each to, be responsible for the planning and organisation of civil defence in his area. These men will live in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The commissioner whose headquarters will be in Christchurch will be responsible for the defence of the major part of Canterbury, Nelson. Marlborough and possibly Westland against such possibilities as nuclear bomb attack as well as for handling measures to relieve national disasters such as earthquake, flood, and fire. Applications for the positions, each of which will carry a salary of £lOOO a year with not less than 20 hours' work a week, closed in September.
Making Progress.— Constable Graeme Thomas Harrison, who was shot in the shoulder on Friday is progressing favourably at the Palmerston North Hospital, it was reported yesterday.
