New Restrictions On Electra Airliners

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 27. The Federal Aviation Agency imposed new restrictions on Lockheed Electra airliners yesterday in a move to reassure the public of the Electra’s safety while the causes of two crashes are determined. The director of the F.A.A., Mr Elwood Quesada, ordered six American airlines operating the prop-jet planes to further reduce the cruising speed, observe new operating rules and to conduct a series of rigid inspections and tests. v

The F.A.A. specifically ordered the airlines to take these precautions: Reduce the normal Electra operating speed to 225 knots (259 miles an hour), which is 50 knots slower than the maximum speed limit placed on the plane last Sunday. Disconnect all automatic pilots until F.A.A.-approved modifi-

cations are incorporated into the devices. Make sure Lockheed’s recommended procedures for refuelling Electras are followed to prevent possible damage to wing structure. Conduct immediate inspection of all Electra wing and centre fuselage sections for any sign of metal fatigue or damage.
