OIL PORT DISASTER
Explosion On Tanker CARACAS March 26. A heavily-loaded Panamanian tanker exploded last night in La Cruz leaving 60 persons dead or missing and five injured, it was reported early today The national news agency, Snac, said the 17,598-ton tanker obil Astral exploded just after taking on a load of 200.000 barrels of oil in the important oil port 170 miles east of Caracas.
The explosion occurred at 9.15 p.m., and two hours later the shattered hulk was still on fire. Fire fighters and rescue crews from La Cruz swarmed around the wreck trying to extinguish the flames The cause of the blast could not be determined immediately The tanker carried a crew of 65 —and was ready to sail for the United States when the explosion occurred
Firemen battled to keep the fire from spreading to the big waterfront oil terminal.
