DOG NUISANCE AT SELWYN HUTS

Complaint Made To Springs Council

At its monthly meeting the Springs County Council received a petition from a group of residents at the Selwyn Huts, in which a complaint was made about what the petitioners described as the “intolerable situation” caused by dogs at the holiday resort. During Christmas and New Year the actions of loose dogs around the huts had been most objectionable, it was stated, especially to women and children, to say nothing of the hydatids menace. The practice of visitors, daily or for longer periods, bringing their dogs to the settlement appeared to be growing rapidly. After a brief discussion the council decided to consult the Health Department about the matter.

Concerning objections raised by the Springs Council to a scheme for amalgamation promulgated by the Paparua County Council, the Local Government Commission forwarded comments by Paparua and asked if Springs was still of the opinion that no good purpose would be served by a discussion on the subject with the commission. The council decided to reply confirming its previously expressed opinion about the proposed scheme.

A letter from the North Canterbury Catchment Board advised the council that a proposal for improvements to the L2 river had been approved by the District Commissioner of Works, the estimated cost being £676. The monetary authority had been receive'’ and the work could be put in hand. Acknowledging a request from the council, the Canterbury Education Board promised to clean up the old school section at Springston. As the present state of the property constituted a fire risk, it was agreed to emphasise the urgency of the work in a letter to the board.

The Mayor of Effingham (Illinois), reported that his salary last year was 800-dollars, the city l2OO-dollars.
