LINESMAN INJURED
20ft Fall At Sub-station
Mr R. McMeekan, of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board’s staff was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital on Sunday afternoon with injuries received while working at the board's Cheviot substation.
With Mr H. Farrant, the board’s Waipara area officer, Mr McMeekan was working on the sub-station structure which was made dead so repair work could be carried out, when a portion of the substation was momentarily made alive, presumably through adjacent 33,000 volt live conductors contacting the dead 11,000 volt lines during the north-west gale. Mr McMeekan received a shock which caused him to fall about 20 feet to the ground. Both men were rendered unconscious and on recovering, Mr Farrant summoned the Cheviot doctor, who attended to Mr McMeekan’s injuries and ordered his removal to hospital. Mr Farrant was able to resume his duties.
Mr McMeekan is still in hospital but is progressing satisfactorily.
