DESTRUCTION OF BLACK SHAGS
Ranger Posted For Identification “The Press" Special Service HAMILTON, January 20. An Auckland Acclimatisation Society ranger will act as spotter for Te Awamutu shooters who plan to destroy a colony of large black shag. The ranger's presence is necessary to identify the bird. The word to shoot will be given when the ranger spots a shag with a pale bill, yellowish face, white chin, crests and mane and black feet. That will be the large black shag. The bird can also be identified by its thighs, which are white during the breeding season.
There are six varieties of New Zealand shags, and only one of them, the large black, may be destroyed without penalty. The five protected by law are the little black shag, the pied shag, the spotted shag, the king or rough-faced shag, and the Stewart Island shag. Shag drives have been held by members of the acclimatisation society on Lakes Arapuni, Karapiro, Whangape and Waikare, all under the guidance of the society’s chief ranger. The society is giving £lO to the Te Awamutu sub-society for ammunition for the drive against the black shag colony.
