Sir—ls it the province of the advisory arts committee to dictate to the City Council, or is it in fact an advisory body as in the case of a Royal commission? Should members impede their own personal preference in the manner in which public funds are disposed? A visit to the Art Gallery to view the purchases of the last few years reveals a definite bias in the choice of material. A Visit to the group show revealed a similar deadly drabness and one came away with a numbed feeling of hopelessness. The visual arts should have something exciting or uplifting to justify their creation and the most profound study fails to reveal these redeeming traits. The exclusive recommendation of such pictures postulates an intellectual snobbery on a par with the snobbery of the social climber, not an ultra-educated sense of appreciation which is totally lacking in the other 99 per cent—Yours, etc., IGNORAMUS NG. 2.
