“SOME LIKE IT HOT”

Eight Hours Above

80 Degrees

Temperatures above 80 degrees were recorded in Christchurch for most of yesterday. From just after 9 a.m., when 77.6 deg. was recorded, the temperature rose to the eighties, and stayed there until 5 p.m. At the Botanic Gardens the maximum temperature was reached between noon and 2 p.m. when 87.2 deg. was recorded; Harewood reached its maximum of 85.2 deg. during the following hour.

A north-west wind, averaging 25 m.p.h. with gusts of up to 45 m.p.h. blew in the city and province. The humidity was 17 per cent., not considered unusually low in north-westerly conditions. As perspiring adults trudged hot city streets, hundreds of happy youngsters flocked to the Centennial pool. From their arrival about 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. about 2400 paid for admission to the pool. This was considered the highest figure for the summer, “and believe me it was a very hectic day” said the woman behind the counter. Most milk bars were well attended throughout the day and the demand for soft drinks and ice-cream was heavy. It was estimated that milk bars in the city area sold approximately 250 gallons of ice-cream and more than 500 gallons of soft drink during the day.
