Stalled Engines
Sir,—Reports of fatal accidents at railway crossings suggest that not every driver knows how to drive his car clear of a railway wh? englne has stalled. With battery and starter in normal working order, the starter has ample power to run the car m low gear. Simply engage first gear or reverse gear and use the starter continuously. Any driver who has never tried this should stop on some unfrequented roadway and try it for himself. The “stalled engine” condition can be imitated by switching off the ignition. Having once driven the car for a few lengths, by use of the starter, the driver should then be mentally ready to use this method in case of emergency. The lives of driver and passengers may depend upon the driver’s ability to get his car clear of a railway line, or clear of some roadway, when the engine has stalled—Yours etc.,
