Population And Birth Control

Sir,—l most strongly deny birth-control will solve population problems, because the real problem is not over-population, but under-developed and under-production. In the Netherlands the density a square mile is 850 persons, the highest in the world, yet the Dutch are not starving or over-populated. But in Asia, where the density is much lower, the people are starving. Why? Because Asia is mostly barren, unfertile, unproductive desert wasteland, and the people must live crowded in the few fertile areas. Why does not science, with its undeniable advances in technology and agriculture, set about rendering such areas fertile, instead of exhorting wives to assume the role of call-girl to their husbands? Twothirds of the world's population have not enough food. Can birth-control lower the population by two-thirds to provide enough food for all? Hardly.—Yours, etc., A.M. January 12, 1960.
