INTRODUCTION OF TV
Cabinet Decision Expected Soon
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 12.
A decision in principle to introduce television in New Zealand is expected to be made by the Cabinet at its meeting next Monday. It is understood that the Minister of Eroadcasting (Mr Boord) will present his report to the meeting together with supporting documents on how best to introduce the service. This week’s meeting of the Cabinet is understood to have discussed at some length the general arguments for and against the introduction of television.
It is expected that the report will be approved and that an announcement will be made shortly afterwards indicating that the Government has agreed in principle to introduce a service this year. Mr Boord spent most of the Christmas and New Year holiday period putting the final touches to the report, which Cabinet will be seeing for the first time next week.
The Minister’s report is based on information gathered by an inter - departmental committee, on a massive amount of evidence from public sources and on highly technical material made available mainly through the Post Office and the broadcasting service.
