SHORTAGE OF ENGINEERS

Effect On Works Programmes

(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 12. The acute shortage of professional engineers in New Zealand could affect adversely the works that can be undertaken this year by the Wellington City Corporation. The city engineer (Mr F. B. C. Jeffreys) said today that in common with similar enterprises in this country his department was well below its desirable strength. His establishment was down approximately eight civil engineers, a structural design engineer, two bacteriologists and a waterworks inspector. The city had a heavy works programme planned for this year, but how much could be completed would be determined by the number of skilled specialists available. A Ministry of Works spokesman confirmed that the shortage of engineering specialists continued to be grave. Once the construction of roads or buildings demanded almost only one-engineer supervision, but technical advances now required specialised attention for many phases of the work. “Our department could use a considerable number ‘of professional engineers of all types,” he said.
