SMUGGLING AT AUCKLAND
Customs Staff Shortage Blamed
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 4. Auckland Customs officers said today they have “given up hope” of getting more searchers and preventive officers for duties on the wharves and at Whenuapai Airport. Appeals had been made to head office for more than a year, they said. Shipping and airline companies have commented for some time on the shortage of uniformed officers. and international airline companies have urged the appointment of more searchers to speed up passenger clearance. Customs men say the understaffing leaves the port wide open to smuggling, and from the results from the limited time they can spend in ships it would appear that smuggling is on a much greater scale than imagined. The Auckland Collector of Customs (Mr W. H. d’Audney) had no comment to make when questioned about plans for more men.
