CARNEY STILL AT LARGE
Police Inquiries Continue Maxwell Carlton Carney, who escaped from police custody last Monday night after being arrested in connexion with the breaking and entering of a United States Antarctic expedition warehouse at Christchurch airport, is believed by the police to be hiding with friends, probably in Christchurch. Police have drawn this conclusion because of the lack of reports of sightings of Carney by members of the public. No reports of any kind were received by the police yesterday. The search for Carney will enter its sixth day today, Carney having eluded detectives at his Lyttelton home about 11.30 p.m. on Monday.
The police consider it unlikely that Carney is hiding out on the Port Hills. They also doubt that Carney, a former seaman, has been able to board a ship at Lyttelton and get away from New Zealand. Detective-Sergeant T. Thomson, who is in charge of the search for Carney, and four other detectives continued inquiries Into his whereabouts yesterday. Their inquiries covered the Christchurch area. Carney, aged 35, Is described as sft 9in in height, of fairly solid build, nearly bald, and with fair hair and blue eyes. He is sharp-featured and has a fresh complexion. He has a scar on his right forearm and a wart on his right forefinger. When he escaped he was wearing a white open-necked shirt, a two-toned red and grey cardigan, and blue pin-stripe suit trousers.
' The Acting-Chief Detective of the Christchurch C. 1.8. (Senior Detective-Sergeant R. S. Smith) said yesterday that the C.LB. would follow up any report from the public concerning Carney.
