LAKE ELLESMERE OUTLET

Heavy Sea Closes Cut

Lake Ellesmere was opened at 5 a.m. on Thursday when the level of the lake rose to 3.65 ft above mean sea level. The North Canterbury Catchment Board’s engineer (Mr H. M. Reid) said that the cut closed again at the next high tide at 4 p.m. on Thursday, but the board’s employees were able to open it again when the tide fell. “The early tide this morning very nearly closed the cut again,” said Mr Reid yesterday. “It reduced the width to about 10ft. but the water was still flowing quite well.” Mr Reid’s . latest information was that yesterday afternoon’s tide had again closed the cut. “A big swell from the south was creating a big sea on the beach,” he said. “If the sea continues we are going to have a bit of trouble trying to keep the cut open.”

Mr Reid said there was already a good area of grazing land flooded around the lake. This was the third time the lake had been opened since April. The board hoped to drain the lake to 6in or Ift below mean sea level when the sea subsided.
