Rutland street-Tomes road Extension
Sir, —Some time ago it was reported in your newspaper that the City Council would be commencing the extension of Rutland street with Tomes road, this work having been approved in the estimates. On reading your paper today, I see no mention of this work, although Kenwyn avenue, which is already in a good state, has been voted £lO,OOO-odd. This seems to be most unreasonable when the Tomes road extension should be pressed ahead. The ratepayers of Tomes road have waited for years for this work to be done —and it should be done. When can it be expected, please?—Yours, etc., STILL WAITING. August 12, 1959.
[The Acting City Engineer (Mr A. H. decks) said that it was thought that the correspondent has misinterpreted the newspaper report. The council had no intention of spending £lO.OOO on Kenwyn avenue; in fact the road was not on the loan schedule. McFaddens road had been included because it was in poor condition The extension of Rutland street and Tomes road was primarily to facilitate the subdivision of certain back land; this would be done when other more urgent work had been completed.]
