Women’s Conveniences
Sir, —As an overseas visitor to your country and having visited other cities with female company. I found Christchurch a truly memorable city. But, unlike others, it lacks certain essential amenities. I presume the local council to be an all-male affair, who have seen that they themselves are adequately catered for: but what of their fairer companions? They are denied access to their conveniences for just under 12 hours in the 24. So I suggest (even though a letter of this kind should come from a woman) that the authorities broaden their outlook and provide a continuous women’s convenience in the city of Christchurch.—Yours, etc., J. WILSON. August 19, 1959.
[The Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) said that at the present time the women's rest rooms in Cathedral sauare were open from 8 a m. to 9.50 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. The women’s rest room in Regent street was open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Any proposals for an extension of these hours which the writer cared to express in a letter to him would be placed before the appropriate council committee.]
