Taxi Stands
Sir.—“ Service’s ” suggestion about taxis cruising instead of waiting on sta.ids has been made before by people who have been overseas. If this were the better system we would be asking for it so as to get the highest possible return. But such is not the case. The population factor eliminates cruising with any certainty of payable returns, plus the following difficulties: mass of right-angle blocks; short space between traffic light lanes; in peak hours bicycles two and three deep between cars parked at kerbs and the roadway. These factors make hailing and picking up almost impossible in certain hours. When taxis are returning to city stands they use the main streets for the chance of a pickup. In the city area the average would not be one a week.— Yours etc. TAXI PROPRIETOR. August 26, 1959.
