Statham Heads Averages

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 24. J. B. Statham, the Lancashire fast bowler, headed both the batting and bowling averages for England in the test series against India which ended today. He took 17 wickets at an average of 13.11 runs each, and two “not out” in his three innings gave him a batting average of 70. The top average by a regular batsman was M. J. K. Smith’s 69.00. He totalled 207 runs in three innings. G. Pullar (Lancashire) with 242 runs in four innings, averaged 60.50 for next place in the list. A. A. Baig, the young Oxford University batsman who was called on by India for the last two tests, was their top bat with an average of 41.25. scoring 165 runs in four innings. V. J. Manjrekar averaged 33.50 for second place, and N Contractor 33.28 for third. Surendra Nath’s medium-paced deliveries gave him top place in the bowling averages with 16 wickets at a cost of 26.62 runs each.
