EXPRESS STRIKES CAR
Ashburton Youths Injured
Two young Ashburton men escaped serious l Injury when the car they were travelling in was struck by the InvercargillChristchurch express on the White House crossing about 20 miles' from Christchurch on the Main South road last evening. The car was overturned and wrecked in the accident, which happened about 6.40 pan. The express was delayed for about 12 minutes. The youths, Alton Bqaven Phillips, aged 19, Of 11 Beatty crescent, Ashburton, and Frederick David McCormick, aged 16, of 118 Aitken street, Ashburton, were admitted to Christchurch Hospital i with head injuries. Their condition last evening was satisfactory. 1 The car whs travelling north and was nearly over the crossing, which is fitted with red warning lights, when the engine struck the rear right-hand side. The car travelled a further 60 feet, overturning several times, before coming to rest in a nearby paddock. -The express was slowing down for the Selwyn river bridge when the collision occurred. Passengers did not even feel a bump. An ambulance from Burnham Military Camp took the youths to Christchurch.
