APPEAL FOR REFUGEES

Good Response In City

Although donations in the house-to-house World Refugee Year appeal conducted by C.0.R.5.0. on Saturday will not be available for the Christchurch district for some days, there is every indication that a very generous response was given to the appeal by the public, according to the C.0.R.5.0. organiser for the northern part of the South Island (Mr G. H. V. Coley) last evening. He said progress totals from many other smaller centres m his district, from the Rakaia river north, showed an excellent response. Returns have still to come to hand from some other centres outside Christchurch where collections were made on Saturday. Nearly 3000 collectors covered the whole of Christchurch and outlying suburbs in the largescale appeal on Saturday morning. They comprised youth groups from Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and Congregational churches, and Churches of Christ, and pupils of Roman Catholic secondary schools. Members of the Rotary Club assisted with cars in the collection in the outer suburbs. Collections will be made in country districts during the next two or three weeks through the help of women’s organisations or country schools.
