THEFT OF £9000 ALLEGED

Clerk Arrested In Christchurch

A bank clerk was arrested by detectives at his home in Christchurch early on Saturday afternoon and will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of stealing £9200 from his employers. The Christchurch Criminal Investigation Branch was notified at 5.15 p.m. on Friday and an intensive investigation began under the direction of Inspector P. Kearney and Chief Detective G. C. Urquhart. Detectives worked until late on Friday evening, and the investigation commenced again next morning. The man was arrested by Senior Detective-Sergeant R. S Smith and Detective-Sergeant W E. Hollinshead and was held in custody in the cells at the Christchurch Central Police Station.

Grass Fire.—A fire which started in dry grass on a property at 21 Bracken street. Avonside. owned by Mrs Isobel Blanchard, at 5.34 p.m. yesterday was brought under control before any damage was caused. One unit from the Woolston station attended.
