PROTECTION OF HEATERS
New Regulations Enforced
Electric radiators and kerosene heaters must now be guarded to comply with the Fireguards Regulations which came into force last year, and it is illegal to sell a heater which does not comply with the'regulations.
Manufacturers were given 12 months to clear their stocks o heaters, and from now on the Health Department will be keeping an eye on heaters on the market.
“There are very few being manufactured now which do not comply with the regulations,” said the senior inspector of the Health Department (Mr T. M. Houston). “We have given them a good chance to see that their heaters comply with the regulations.”
The hardware manager of a Christchurch department store said the regulation did not affect stocks held by his firm very much. Practically all heaters were adequately guarded and the legislation applied more to the installation of space heaters in houses. Enforcement of the regulation where second-hand heaters were concerned would be almost impossible. said the manager of an auctioneering firm. He said his firm could not refuse to buy a heater which did not conform with the regulation, because the vendor would simply take the heater to another auctioneer, who would probably accept* it.
