“Australian View Changed”
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) JAKARTA, March 8. Dr. Helmi, the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia, said yesterday that Australia’s attitude towards Indonesia had changed considerably.
Dr. Helmi is in Jakarta for discussions with the Indonesian Foreign Minister (Dr. Subandrio) on the results of Dr. Subandrio’s recent visit to Australia.
He told reporters: “The atmosphere there can now be compared to 1947, when Australia supported Indonesia in its struggle for independence.
“I am convinced that Australia and New Zealand, though of Western descent, will really be friends with Asian countries. Their characters are different from those of Westerners in general. They are not arrogant and have no imperialist designs.” The ambassador said Australia was now willing to accept that the West New Guinea dis*pute was a matter between Indonesia and the Dutch.
