WELLINGTON, January 22. New Zealand’s best university swimmers were sadly outclassed by the touring Australian students in the first of two inter-Dominion tests at the Naenae Olympic Pool tonight The Australians won the men’s section by 42Vz points to 14%, and the women’s by 29 points to 18. D. Thiele, Australia’s 100-metre Olympic backstroke title-holder, swam effortlessly once again to better L. Hurring’s New Zealand 110 yards backstroke record by 2.4 sec. Thiele clocked 64.45ec over the two lengths to better his own interDominion university record of 74sec. Hurring’s New Zealand record stood at 66.8 sec. The Australian all-rounder, P. Anderson, beat two inter-Dominion records during the night, and in one of his swims—the 110yds butterfly—also bettered' the best New Zealand time by .9sec. Anderson swam the 220yds medley in 2min 47sec, which beat the old inter-Dominion time by ssec. B. Morgan took 2.2 sec oft the inter-Dominion 22Oyds record of 2 min 23.45ec. I. Macdonald, the lone New Zealand record breaker, cut .Isec from the inter-Dominion 220yds men’s breaststroke time. Macdonald swam the distance in 2min 58.95ec.. The Australians broke both, the 440yds medley relay and 440yds freestyle relay inter-Dominion records. They swam the medley In 4min 52.85 e old time being 5 min o.9sec—and then went on with a 4min 20.Isec freestyle relay time to beat the existing New Zealandheld mark of 4min 24.55ec.
