REGULATIONS ON QUARRYING
Two Certificates To Be Issued ZeoKma Prra. MMietotton* WELLINGTON. January 22. Quarries regulations gazetted today'make a higher degree ol competence necessary for the operations and large-dimension tunnel projects than is required from the manager of, small quarries. The Minister of Mines (Mr Hackett), 'said the regulations were framed to ensure proper standards of safety tor ail men engaged in querying. Provision had been made in the regulations for the institution in two years of two grades of managers' certiflcates->-A and B classes. The A class—granted only after a written examination would apply to the larger-scale operations. The B class would continue to be granted after oral examination. AU certificates already held would be given A grade status. Provision was . also made for the issue of shot-firer certificates to workmen responsible for the preparation of explosive charges and their loading and firing. Also included were regulations covering the use of electrical equipment in tunnels. \ Other regulations fixed a maximum height of lOOft'to a quarry face, provide for the use of protective headgear at all quarries, and extend the use of safety belts and ropes to bins as well as to quarry faces. Mr Hackett said that basically most of the regulations were the same as those contained in the previous Quarries Regulations, 1948.
