Success At Napier ' Carnival

(New Zeaiana Press Association) NAPIER, January 15. The Australian University swimming team won nine of the 13 events in which they competed against N..Z. Universities, a selected Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay team, in Napier this evening.

The carnival was held in dull and rather cold weather before a capacity crowd. Interest centred on the performance in the 100 yards backstroke of the Australian Olympic champion. D Thiele (Australia), who at Rotorua lowered the New Zealand allcomers record of 60.3 sec to 56.45ec. This evening Thiele clocked 57.3 for the distance.

The New Zealand women’s breaststroke champion. Miss L. Orbell, swimming for New Zealand Universities, won the 100 yards women’s breaststroke event in Imin 25sec and also the 50 yards women’! butterfly in 37<8sec.

I. McKenzie (Australia) swam 100 yards butterfly in 59sec, the best time ever recorded in New Zealand, and beat his team-mate, P Anderson, for the first time on the New Zealand tour.
