U.S. BASE AT HAREWOOD

Tenders Invited For Headquarters

The United States Navy yesterday invited tenders • for the conversion of a Harewood transit camp block to a headquarters for Antarctic operations. A spokesman said the tenders would be ‘‘publicly opened” on January 27. Tenders hdd been invited in five New Zealand cities for/the work Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.

The present work was only a start and tenders for a major reconstruction job to complete the navy’s .advance base would be called before the end of the month.

‘‘This is only a very small part of the total work,” the navy task force construction officer (Commander H. Whitney) said yesterday referring to the first tender. "We had to get going quickly with the headquarters because we have got to get out of our Kilmore street premises by the end of March. Within the next two weeks another advertisement will appear for the balance of the work.”

Commander Whitney said the bulk of the work to be done at Harewood would be the convert sion of barracks buildings for messing and sleeping and general living.
