ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

Telescope Census Held

A census of telescopes owned by members of the Canterbury Astronomical Society was recently undertaken with the idea of turning theoretical knowledge to practical use by a systematic recording of results obtained -from research work.

The secretary of the society (Mr B. Marsh) said yesterday that th* response by members to the census had been poor, although sufficient numbers had been recorded to form two groups with six persons in each.

An observing sheet has been drawn up and the two groups will now use their own equipment for observations concerned with planetary detail. The results will be handed in each month for analysis and any problems which arise will be resolved by use of the society’s 14.5 Cassagranarian telescope at the observatory in Creyke road. "If the two groups work satisfactorily, the findings obtained each month will be recorded in the society’s books for future reference,” said Mr Marsh. At the end of the annual year (in March) the society’s achievements will be reviewed by Mr Marsh.
