New Champion’s Record

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 11. There is literally only one game for the new singles bowling champion, Senior-Sergeant W. R. Fleming (Newtown). He has never played anything but bowls. Fleming began bowling' 26 years ago and in the meantime has become recognised as one of Wellington’s most formidable and consistent competition players. The champion sympathised with Connew for having reached the Dominion singles final three times without having collected the title. "That’s really bad luck, and I don’t think you played your best today," he told Conhaw. Fleming was the only player who beat Connew In the singles in this tournament, and he did it twice. Connew, aged 52, has beeri playing bowls for 25 years. He is Auckland’s open champion at present.
