Hanif Makes 499 Not Out

(N.Z. Press A ssodatton—Copy rig ht) KARACHI, January 12. Hanif Mohammad, the 24-year-old Pakistan test opening batsman, scored 499 not out in Karachi yesterday—the highest score ever made in a first-class cricket match.

Hanif, playing for Karachi again Bahawalpur, batted for 10 hours 40 minutes. His score eclipsed the" 452 not out by Sir Donald Bradman for New South Wales against Queensland which had stood for nearly 30 years as the highest individual first-class score. Bradman’s 452 not out was scored in six hours 55 minutes He was 24 at the time. Hanif is the fifth batsman <to score more than 400 runs in first class innings. The others are Bradman; B. B. Nimtoalkar (India), 443 not out for Mahrashtra v. Western India States at Poona, in 1948-49; W. H. Ponsford (Australia)., 437 for Victoria v. Queensland at Melbourne, in 192728, and 429 for Victoria v Tasmania at Melbourne, in 19222°, and A. C. MacLaren (England), 424 for Lancashire v. Somerset at Taunton in 1895.

Batting for 16 hours 13 minutes for Pakistan against the West Indies at Kingston in January, 1958, Hanif set a record for the duration of an innings in firstclass cricket. His score of 337 was the third highest test score ever.

The highest score ever made in any cricket match for which proper scores were kept was 628 not out by A. E. J. Collins in a junior house match at. Clifton College in 1899. He batted for six hours 50 minutes 'and his innings was spread over five days.
