One Hurt, Two Others Taken In Charge

After a brawl in Gashel street early last evening a United States Navy sailor was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital and two other sailors were taken In charge by a naval shore patrol A crowd of about 40 persons gathered in Cashel street about 6.30 p.m. to watch the brawl. The sailors are members of the crew of the United States Navy cargo ship Arneb at present in Lyttelton.

Police and American naval patrols arrived and the two sailors were takep in charge. Their injured ship-mate was taken to hospital. He was later taken aboard the Arneb and his condition was reported to be satisfactory.

Inspector C. H. Reardon, of the Christchurch police, said the incident was a domestic matter for the United States Navy. “The shore patrol dealt with it themi selves.” He said that since the 'Arneb arrived at Lyttelton on Tuesday morning the behaviour of the United States sailors in Christchurch had been exceptionally good. “It could not have been better. They are very well conducted young men. This is the first incident that has come to my notice,” he added.
