NEW YEAR HONOURS LIST

Two Civil Knighthoods Conferred (Now Zealand Frew AModation) WELLINGTON, January 1. Two civil knighthoods are conferred by the Queen in the New Zealand list of the New Year honours, announced today. Dr. G. S. Peren, who has retired from the position of principal of Massey Agricultural College, is created a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Mr Justice Hutchison, of Wellington, and formerly of Christchurch, is created a Knight Bachelor. The Governor-General (Viscount Cobham) has announced that the Queen has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of the New Year, to confer the following honours:

Bom in Christchurch, he was educated at St Michael’s School add Christchurch Technical College. He joined the city council staff in 1913 and, except for a short period in the Army during World War I, has been in the council’s service since. His first appointment was as a junior in the city treasury. From there he was transferred to the town clerk’s department, became ledger-keeper in the treasury and successively filled a number of other posts until he was appointed assistant town clerk in 1937 and town clerk three years later. He has also undertaken the secretaryships of the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council, the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board and the Metropolitan Transport Licensing Authority. In his young manhood he was a surf lifesaver, twice captained a team to victory in the New Zealand championships, played cricket and Senior Rugby—once for Canterbury—and still takes a keen interest in these sports. These days he plays golf. Mr Oliver Duff is a former editor of ’‘The Press” (1929-32). and the "New Zealand Listener” (1939-50). He was born in 1883 in Otago and attended the Lawrence District High School and the Otago Boys' High School He was 18 when he went to fight in the South African War and when he returned to New Zealand after the war went to Otago University and graduated bachelor of arts in 1905. After school teaching for 10 years he joined the editorial staff of the Christchurch “Sun,” became editor of the “Timaru Herald" in 1920. and joined “The Press” two years after that. After resigning from “The Press” he established and conducted for four years the “North Canterbury Gazette” (Rangiora). He became editor of the National Centennial publications in 1938 and in the following year joined the “Listener” as editor. He is now retired and farms at Halswell. Mr 3. Patterson was a constable at Leeston before he was appointed Resident Commissioner and Magistrate for the Chatham Islands in 1952. He completed his term this year and is returning to the Police Force in the North Island.

Brigadier J. T- Burrows is officer commanding the Southern Military District in Christchurch. He has had a distinguished career as a soldier, teacher, and sportsman. Aged 54, he was educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School and Canterbury University College. He taught on the staffs of St. Andrew’s College and his own school. On the outbreak of World War II he tenlisted in the Army, left the Dominion with the rank of captain, and was appointed brigadier in 1944. In addition to being awarded the D.S.O. he was twice mentioned in dispatches. He became rector of Waitaki Boys’ High School in 1945. In 1949 he joined the Regular Force. Brigadier Burrows has represented New Zealand at Rugby (1928), and Canterbury at cricket and was a Canterbury and New Zealand university boxing blue. Dr. Muriel Bell, Health Department nutritionist of Dunedin, was born in Murchison. She was educated at Nelson Girls’ College, the University of Otago and University College, London. She is a member of the New Zealand Milk Board, the New Zealand Board of Health, the New Zealand Dietitians* Society and other medical societies.
