Water Polo Tournament

Youth and experience have been : mixed in the Canterbury A team! which will compete in a triangular ’ water polo tournament with Otago and Southland at Dunedin this week-end. Canterbury will send' two teams. The A team is a strong one although R. Henry is unable to go' and D. Billensden has withdrawn because of an injury. Canterbury’s player-coach, C. Chambers, one of the Dominion s finest exponents of the game, will play. Chambers was a New Zealand water polo representative at the 1950 Empire Games and has also' represented the Dominion at swimming and surfing. There is ’ no more experienced man in the game. H. Schout. who represented Canterbury last year, is also in the team. He has a powerful build and is a prolific goal scorer. Australian A. Jackson is from Australia, j and although he has only played three games in Christchurch he is; showing enough form and ball control to warrant his selection. C. Bidwell is one of the younger players who is representing the Canterbury A team for the first time. Bidwell is well known in swimming and surfing, where he is a champion in both and with a few more provincial games he will be approaching New Zealand water polo honours. J. Broomfield is a very heady and experienced player also. He has played for Canterbury and New Zealand University sides before, but he has not played better than at present. Broomfield is the captain of the Elmwood club, which is having its first year in senior ranks. I. McDonald, the Canterbury, New Zealand, and University breaststroke swimmer, is also playing his first game for Canterbury and this tournament should stand him in good stead for the future. K. Lampe, the goalkeeper, is always, a hard man to beat. Good Chance The Canterbury A team has an excellent chance of . winning the tournament, but Otago may surprise as it has before. The Canterbury B team comprises all young players and it shows good foresight on the part of the selectors in choosing a young team—the average age is about 18—to give the members the experience of big play. The teams are:— Canterbury A team: C. Bidwell, C. Chambers, J. Broomfield, A. Jackson, K. Lampe. I. McDonald. H. Schout. Canterbury B team: D. Eaton, P. Hatchwell, D. Inkster, N. Lanyon, A. Milesi (captain), B. Rattray, G’. Richards.
