Around The Greens

J. Moffitt, who spends a great i deal of time in the administration of bowls as Christchurch Centre secretary, is also finding time to compete in the Papanui club’s championships. Although with E. Foster he suffered an 8-18 loss to J. Hadley and E. Fielding, this initial set-back is not likely to upset him.

The positions of the clubs in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s premier competition the Three Fours—at the end of the third round were:— Section A: R.S.A. 15 points, Canterbury 121, Sydenham 13. Section B: United 14, Fendalton 13, Christchurch 13. Section C: United 17. South

Brighton 13, Elmwood 13. • Some unexpected results arose from matches in the Sydenham club pairs championship. L. Cairns and M. Lawson surprised with a win over the strong and experienced pair of G. Gibson and F. Hickman and W. Bowden and A. Collender beat last year’s champion pair, R. Britten and A. Britten. In another pairs title match. D. Mitchell and E. Fox were trailing the pair skipped by F. Hannam by >4 points with six heads to play but fought back well to win the match?

There have been some interesting games in the fours championships at Fendalton. W. Dailey defeated C. Holland in an interesting and closely contested game. E. Taylor, Holland’s second, and H. Collett, Dailey’s third were outstanding in a game where all the players went well. A surprise result was the defeat of H. P. Rennie by D. Gibson. After the nineteenth end Rennie was eight down on the board but a seven—all drawn shots—gave him a real chance. However, he was not able to score on the last end losing by 3 points.

There is a strong entry in the fours championship at Fendalton. Among those entered is the team which won the Champion of Champions in 1956. skipped by Pryce Jones. He began bowls at Oxford in 1918. and was with the United Club for 28 years before he joined Fendalton. Jones won high honours as a bowler and is a country club representative on the Christchurch Centre.

With only one change in his four this season. A. Smith, skip of last year’s winning team in the Sydenham club championI ships, had a very hard game {against G. Lowry’s four. Lowry : was three down on the last head 1 when he trailed the kitty for three with a good bowl. However, he lost on the extra end. Two other prominent members .of the club, A. Besley and D. Barron met in another fours match which Besley won. F. 1 Hickman and W. Healey also gained wins.

The Christchurch Centre champion four of H. Wall. C. Smith. R. Bond and C. H. Manning will play again in the Papanui club s fours championship this season and is considered to have a good chance of winning. This team is expected to meet strong opposition. however, from the combination of G. Thomas, R. Jeffreys, E. Foster and J. Moloney.
