WORK OF Y.W.C.A.
Satisfactory progress in the work of the association was reported on at a recent meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors
A chair was presepted to Mr A. F. W. Jones in appreciation of his work in the general maintenance of the Y.W.C.A. buildings and his “readiness to advise at all times.”
Miss R. Barlee, extension secretary, reported that the boys’ club had visited the Linwood Gymnasium and the Civic Theatre to watch wrestling. Mr R. Crack had come as woodwork Instructor. During the first week of the holidays a bottle drive had raised £l3 6s. A girls’ club now met at Hornby School on Thursday afternoons. Nineteen girls between eight and 10 arrived for the opening. Also on Thursdays a ballet class is held at the school.
Miss E. Cook, programme secretary, in her report on the daytime camp, held in the school holidays, expressed appreciation of the parents who billeted the 15 schoolgirl visitors from Palmerston North Y.V/.C.A. The fencing club was taking part in the provincial tournament The charm course finished last week, and it was hoped that some of the girls would join the dancing club, which was flourishing, but short of girls to partner the men, the report said. Arrangements for the street appeal on October 10 were in hand. Seventy trainees of the dental school would collect in the early morning as a mark of appreciation of the Y.W.C.A. for providing board for some trainees at Riverlaw Hostel. Miss C. E. Robinson presided.
