Colour And Its Problems

Sir,—lt has been suggested that New Zealand should cancel the projected Rugby tour.of South Africa as a protest against apartheid May one put forward an alternative? It is understood that, in deference to South African sensibilities on the subject. Maoris are not included in New Zealand teams on such occasions. But Nepias apart the contribution of the Maoris to New Zealand football is a pretty formidable one and in any average year one or twq of them at least would probably qualify for the All Black iersey. A New Zealand side, therefore. arbitrarily deprived of Maoris, is not truly representative. and, if the tour materialises, the South Africans would have to accept the challenge, and the oossibility of defeat, by a side that, in the eyes of New Zealand and the rest of the Rugby world, is no more than "a” team.—Yours, etc., M.T.
