ABERDEEN ANGUS SALE

(“The Press'’ Special Service) DANNEVIRKE, September 23. The top price obtained at the New Zealand Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association’s annual sale of pedigree led bulls at Dannevirke today went to the South Island breeders, Roberts and Company, Middlemarch. Their senior yearling, Eldesco sth of Gladbrook, champion of its class in the show, which preceded the sale, was sold for 1700 guineas, going to a Hawke’s Bay buyer, Mr H. G. Dalby. There was a record bench of buyers. The supreme champion bull, Donald Grant and Company’s (Dannevirke) Bruce 42nd of Mangatoro, sold for 1600 guineas to the same buyer. It was the first time that South Island breeders have been prominent in the annual show. James R. Fraser,. Pleasant Point, won the Southern Hawke’s Bay Stock and Station Agents’ Challenge Cup for the best two-year-old with Battery of Stern, and Roberts and Company were third in the same class. Robert Fraser’s (Timaru) Eregli 3rd of Heathfield was fifth in the junior yearling championship. The market was quieter than usual but nevertheless consistent. There was a good quality line of two-year-olds. But yearlings were a little disappointing; During the first day of the sale 52 bulls changed hands for 30,855 guineas, an average of 593 1-3 guineas, compared with 63 for 42,745 guineas, an average of 678£ guineas last year. South Island sales were: James R. Fraser, 1000 guineas; Robert Fraser, 350, 480. 925 guineas; R. K. Ireland, Oamaru, 500, 360, 420 guineas; Roberts and Company, Middlemarch, 1200, 450, 1700, 530 guineas; Alan Grant, Waimate, 300 guineas. Buyers: F. F. Wilding. North Canterbury, one at 775 •guineas; J. R. Hargreave, South Canterbury, one at 925 guineas; R. G. Allen, Southbridge, one at 425 guineas.

One of the more successful vendors on the day were Roberts and Company, who sold four bulls for an average of 970 guineas. It is the first sale for many years when 300 guineas has not been topped.
