RACING Braganza Sprints Fast At Riccarton

Braganza showed high speed in a trial on the plough at Riccarton on Saturday, and by doing so cohsolidated his position as favourite for the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton. Ridden by his race rider, A. J. Stokes, Braganza run six furlongs in lmin 20 4-ssec.

He covered the first two furlongs leisurely in 29 4-ssec, but when his stablemate Tombola (W. Hanlin) joined in for the last three furlongs the pace quickened markedly. They sped over .the last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec and went to the post on., terms. - ■ " Pack Drill tA. J. Stokes) and Iroquoi (A. H. Eastwood) also sprinted fast on the plough. Eastwood) by a length and a half finishing six furlongs in lmin 18 l-ssec. They recorded 50 3-ssec for the last four furlongs and* 38 4-ssec for the final three. Wild Clover (T. Wilson) was keen to increase his . speed in his half-mile 'trial. He ran the last three furlongs smoothly in 39 2-ssec. Gallops on Grass Most of the work was done on the No. 1 grass- Motueka (R. W. Gould) worked from the mile, but under a good hold all the way, and took 54 2-ssec for the last half mile. Cruising (A. H. Eastwood) led Smuggles (J. L. Coulter) by a length and a half finishing a mile in lmin 45 l-ssec. Smuggles found the pace too strong over the last half mile, run in 51sec. Waterfall (G. W. Mein), Foxplay (M. Gillanders), and Rayspar (N. Eastwood) sprinted half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Pai Hoa (N. Eastwood) led his stablemate Heath (L. McGuire) by a length finishing half a mile in 50 2-ssec. Pai Hoa is a promising novice in J. A. ‘ Cox’s team. Medbury was placed at Ashburton at his last start and little improvement would be needed to give him a win. Sarcelle (W. Beck) showed signs of pleasing progress in preparation for another campaign by running six furlongs smoothly in lmin 18 2-ssec, the last four in 51 2-ssec. Fast Sprint Natella (E. G. Low) sprinted half a mile in 49 4-ssec, and 'appeared to do her work well. Brummel (N. Cowles) followed in 50 l-ssec, and Keep Clear (L. McGuire) took 53 4-ssec. Tickled Pink (R. B. Taggart) and Tripped (C. T. Wilson) recorded lmin 19 4-ssec for six furlongs. The pace was strongest early, and they ran the first two furlongs in 25 l-ssec. Tamarisk (R. W. Gould) and Tintagel (G. W. Mein) ran from the half-mile on terms in 52 l-ssec. Tamarisk was kept going at speed for about' two furlongs more past the post. Aloniing (J. L. Coulter) could not match his stablemates Hopeful (G. W. Mein) and Treasure Mine (B. S. Dodds) 'for half a mile, dropping well behind in the straight. Hopeful and Treasure Mine recorded 49 3-ssec, a good gallop for non-winners. Mexico (C. T. Wilson) and Romancing (L. McGuire) sped over six furlongs in lmin 17 4-5 sec. They reeled off the first furlongs in 25 l-ssec, and stayed on terms to the end. The stablemates Nehru (E. G. Low) and Ghana (W. Gibbs) ran half a mile figsily in 54sec. Pictavia Girl (N. Cowles) and Amulette (K. Reggett) recorded 52sec for their half-mile. Pleasant Ways (I. Petefs) and Kelp (G. Baldwin) stayed on terms while running half a mile in 50 4~ssec. Brianbra won w gallop by a length and a half and recorded 52sec. Gold Crown (R. W. Gould) had a short lead over Devon (I. -Peters), Water Girl (K. Quayle) and Bolero (W. Gibbs) finishing half a mile in 50 l-ssec.' Coral Chief (L. McGuire) rari ; home from the half-mile in 51 l-ssec. The stablemates Blonde Sprite <E. G. Low) and Pinnace (K. Quayle) shaped well'in a fast five-furlong trial. They ran the last half-mile attractively in 50 l-ssec. The two-year-old Melons (N. Eastwood) ran three furlongs >ln 41 4-ssec. He may have his first race for his Wellington owner, Mr . J. H. G. O’Brien, at Trentharp next month. Adversary (W. McGregor) and Skyrider (J. L. Coulter) had a short lead over Saunter (A. Cowan) ending a run over four hurdles. Skyrider has not yet raced as a hurdler, but his jumping in his schooling has been good; Bobbie Burns (T. Wilson) shaped well over four hurdles, though he was in close at the last flight. Ditched (W. McGregor) jumped six hurdles safely. He is now owned by Mr J. A. Randle and is in M. J. Wadley’s team.
