FIRE DESTROYS HUT AND CARAVAN
Occupant’s Narrow Escape
A reading contractor, Mr H. W Jessop, narrowly escaped being burnt to death yesterday when his mobile hut and caravan, camped 'by the Waimakarlri river bridge, above Cass was destroyed by tire. c. The blaze started in the early hours of the morning during a snowstorm. Mr Jessop who was sleeping in the caravan was awakened by the detonation of explosives stored in the hut. He was not able to save much more than a few blankets. The hut and the caravan were, destroyed, but Mr Jessop’s car was not damaged. A trunk telephone line from Arthur’s Pass to Darfleld was brought down by the flames. The cause of the fire is not known.
