Historic Whaleboat
Four years of negotiations ended last week when the Whanau-apanui tribe, which lives around Te Kaha, gave one of its early whaleboats to the Gisborne Museum. The whaleboat, built in the 1880’s, was last used in a six-hour chase to harpoon the last and largest white whale to be killed on the east coast. The gift wjll x commemorate one of the pioneer industries of the area. A large crowd, including the only surviving member of the crew of the boat, gathered to see it off on its final Journey from Te Kaha to ’Gisborne m H.MJT.Z.S. Endeavour. ■,
