Professional Offer To Elliott

An American sports promoter flew into Melbourne last night willing to offer 250,000 dollars to Herb Elliott, the Australian runner, to turn professional. The promoter is Mr Leo Leavitt, who is in Melbourne to arrange a tour of the . Harlem Trotters’ professional basketball team. “Elliott is the greatest name in sport today,” Mr Leavitt said.
Asked how Elliott would earn his money, he replied: “Why, in exhibitions, a film or two, or even tap dancing.” Elliott, replying ter a radiotelephone inquiry by an Australian Sunday paper, said in Malmo, Sweden, that he was unlikely to accept the offer. “I don’t think there is a chance of my accepting it,” he said. “I’ve got my sights set on a place in the Australian team for the 1960 Olvmpics in Rome.” Elliott yesterday won a mile race at Malmo in 3min 58sec. Dan Waern of Sweden, was second ind Murrav Halberg, of New Zealand, third.
