COMPLAINT BY LEBANON
Pressure Applied For Withdrawal
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) BEIRUT, August 9. A group of Lebanese Deputies —mainly Opposition and neutrals —have opened a drive to get the Government to withdraw its United Nations complaint of Syrian “massive intervention” in the Lebanese insurrection.
They said the complaint should be withdrawn or at least frozen, in view of the exchange of goodwill messages between President Nasser, of the Arab Republic, and the Lebanese President-elect, General Fuad - Chehab.
At the same time, political discussions continued on the possibility of forming a caretaker government to remain in office until late September when General Chehab assumes office.
The speaker of the chamber of deputies, Mr Abdel Osseira, said last night he had positive information that the government of the Prime Minister, Sami Bey el Solh, would resign if agreement could be reached on ary interim administration.
Mr Osseira, a staunch supporter of General Chehab, appealed to the insurgents to adopt “a more positive attitude” — meaning, presumably, that they should lay down their arms. “Continuation of the crisis.” Mr Osseira declared, “means keeping United States occupation forces in the Lebanon ... it also means jeopardising the safety of the people and running the risk of a collapse in the country’s economy.”
